Highly Recommend
This book is demonstrably false by the accounts of contemporary historians as well as by evidence available at the time. A previous reviewer suggests that it was a "catalyst for power" in the South. Instead, it was a catalyst for brutality against African Americans and a new surge of political terrorism in the South. It is a relic, to be read only as documentation of the bigotry of its time.
Some have accused the author, James Shepherd Pike, of being false despite his past of being a most bitterly anti-slavery Unionist from Maine. Historian Robert Franklin Durdin is the one who has raised most of these accusations. His most compelling argument is to merely accuse Pike of being a racist. Whatever biases Mr. Pike may have very well held it doesn't mean his accountings are necessarily wrong.
To paraphrase I'll quote Wikipedia here, "Historian Mark Summers concludes that Pike stressed the sensational, but 'however maliciously and mendaciously he shaded his evidence, his accounts squared with those of his colleagues Charles Nordhoff of the New York Herald and H.P. Redfield of the Cincinnati Commercial. James Freeman Clarke, a leading Boston abolitionist, visited South Carolina and reported back to his Boston congregation that the facts presented by Pike, 'were confirmed by every man whom I saw.' "
Even the infamous carpetbagger, Gov. Albert Ames of Mississippi, was appalled at what he saw as the terrible mismanagement of South Carolina (and Louisiana.)
If one really finds the material of this book so hard to believe one may need only glance at modern African states such as Haiti, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to see examples of the wanton corruption and incompetence outlined in this book.
